If you want to see what the interior looks like, check the image below! It's the old saying, "A picture says a thousand words."

On the left, you can see the words with their definitions. Over on the right is the actual word search puzzle with the rows of words to search for beneath it.

Each letter of the alphabet has its own 'double spread', like the image shown below. We hope your kids will enjoy hunting and learning what the words mean, too!

These are DIFFERENT!

My goal is for children and adults alike to not just find all the words in each Shapely puzzle, but to appreciate the creativity within the curving outlines itself. I want eyes to light up in the search - whether in thinking strategically about hunting down words or simply admiring my asymmetric lettering compositions. Pleasing both sides of the brain was my aim!

Where Did Word Search Puzzles Come From?

Word searches, also known as word find puzzles, are a type of puzzle where players scan a grid of letters looking for hidden words written in the grid. Here are some details on the origins of word search puzzles:

  • In the United States, word searches started appearing in puzzle books and magazines in the early 20th century, around the 1920s and 1930s. Though the creator is unknown, many credit the popularity of the puzzle to its inclusion in Dell puzzle magazines at that time.
  • The earliest word searches were simple grids with a list of hidden words to find, without any overarching theme. It wasn't until later decades that thematic word searches became more commonplace.
  • While traditionally printed on paper, word search puzzles made the jump to digital formats as personal computers, apps, and educational software gained steam. This increased their distribution and accessibility.

So in summary, while word search puzzles had roots in printed Victorian puzzles of England, they gained prominence in America in the 1920s/30s via print magazines and books before flourishing in the computer age. Their origins come from creative puzzle inventors, but much is still unknown about the specific designers of the earliest word search grids.
